INDONESIA travel-
TEACHERs FOR
GLOBAL CLASSROOMS, 2012
A component of the grant with TGC is international travel. Our cohort of 66 teachers was divided between Ghana, Brazil, Morocco, India, Ukraine, and Indonesia, where I spent two weeks.
My experience in the capitol city of Jakarta, as well as the suburb of Tangerang, allowed me to visit a variety of schools and meet students, teachers, principals, and education officials. My host school, INSAN Cendekia, is an Islamic boarding school for students from many Indonesian islands. Located in Tangerang, Indonesia, my teaching partner, Amy Besnard, and I observed, taught, and participated in all aspects of Indonesian education. INSAN Cendekia is a highly competitive school - out of 4,000 applicants, only 120 students are accepted each year. The academics are rigorous, and the graduation rate is high, with 96% of students attending Indonesian universities, and 4% going overseas for college.
Timing our visit during Ramadan gave us an added bonus of a first-hand experience into the Islamic culture as we were graciously invited to join in all aspects of their holy days celebrations. We were welcomed into homes, and treated with the utmost respect as we learned from each other during our stay.
