ESSENTIAL QUESTION
FOR INDONESIA
As I prepared for my journey to Indonesia, I thought hard about what I wanted to learn from the experience. I knew that study of the country itself might not blend easily with my current teaching assignment, so I decided to look more conceptually at the trip.
I found myself drawn back to the idea of global service and social justice. What experiences have the Indonesian people have that shape their desire to compete in the 21st century economy? What common stories do Indonesians and Americans have when looking at the development of their countries? How are human rights issues dealt with in Indonesia?
To focus my thinking, I decided to look at cultural parallels. My essential question of study became:
"How do issues such as economic disparity, gender differences, religion, access to education, societal expectations, and a sense of nationalism effect behaviors and practices of developing countries?"
